VTG 1937 Seth Thomas Plymouth Tambour Mantle Clock, Model 891, Working Art Deco Classic. For your consideration is a Depression-Era timepiece found in many living rooms across the country during the 1930s and 40s. Uncovered locally, this attractive piece runs well and keeps accurate time. Clock speed is adjusted with the included (not original) key, which also winds the mainspring as well as the half-hour and hour strike mechanism (chime). The chime is loud and clear but currently out of sync with the actual time and strikes intermittently. Adjustment upon arrival, as well as general cleaning and oiling, should be done to get this feature working consistently and to extend the overall life of this 85-year-old clock. The glass and brass rim door is firmly latched but easily opens to access the clock’s face. The wooden humpback-shaped body shows some age and use-related changes, including occasional scratches and stains, but these blemishes do not detract at all from its stately appearance. The back door opens to the clock’s working gears, rods, and pendulum, and the model, month, and year of manufacture are etched on a support brace. Measurements are 19 1/4″(l) x 6 1/4″(w) x 8 1/4(h), and weight is 5 lbs, 14 1/2 oz. The Plymouth Clock Company was formed in the early 1930s by the Seth Thomas Corporation to sell a lower cost clock during the Great Depression. They were more affordable for the general public and helped keep Seth Thomas competitive during ecomically hard times.
