Art Deco Clock Girl, Bird and Dogs by Pierre Sega and Japy Freres
Art Deco Clock Girl, Bird and Dogs by. Pierre Sega and Japy Freres. French – Circa 1925. Excellent condition, fully working. A stunning and rare clock by the well known sculptor. It features a charming scene of a girl holding a bird aloft to save it from her two large and playful dogs. Beautifully modelled in coloured and patinated white metal. The clock case is veneered in the most fantastic early celluloid, piano black, mottled green and faux mother of pearl. The dial is matted gold, screen printed with stylised elongated numerals and complete with it’s original square form blued steel hands. The superb bronze half moon bezel is fitted with the original bevelled glass. The French movement is of excellent quality and is by. It is a traditional’Pendule de Paris’ movement with a pendulum. It is in excellent clean and running condition. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Condition of the case is very good. The celluloid veneer has some shrinkage cracks and gaps and some slight marks. The original finish of the metal work has worn and faded to a lovely patina over time. The glass is excellent and original. The dial is also excellent, some very slight fading to the lettering. Signature of the artist. On the girls leg. Clockmaker’s mark on the movement backplate. Pierre Sega – although a prolific sculptor during the Art Deco period, very little is known about him. Believed to be French, or certainly worked in France, he produced many figural items including lamps and clocks. He worked mainly in spelter and made many pieces using celluloid materials as covering for wooden bases and clock surrounds, with faux tortoishell and pearlised finishes. He used a lot of classical subjects such as Pan, Pannette and Diane the Huntress. Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
