Stunning Mid-30s Art Deco Vedette France Large Alarm Clock Red Swirled Bakelite
1930s FRENCH DECO BAKELITE TABLE CLOCK WITH ALARM BY VEDETTE. This remarkable timepiece is from my personal collection of clocks curated since 1972. Commencing with apprenticeship to a European master clock and watchmaker through high school graduation, freshmen year of college and remainder of the 1970s, I sensitively restored clocks of all types; opening service and sales showrooms in the western suburbs of Chicago. Swirled and mottled red Bakelite case of elongated octagonal form on a shallow plinth cast with vermiculite flanked by stepped brickwork. Plate glass crystal over silvered metal bezel/liner. Matte and glossy aluminum color dial with bold printed numbers and minute indices. Subsidiary square alarm dial. Blued steel hands pierced and divided with luminescent fill. Chromed steel backplate with winding keys marked for movement and alarm. Knurled knobs for hand and alarm setting. Winding the alarm spring raises the push-button at center top of case – engaging a LOUD bell. 30-hour mechanical (ticking) movement with balance wheel. Time and alarm operational. However, I suggest the owner NOT rely on this rapidly approaching 90 year old Frenchman for wake-ups. 4.2″ high, 5.1 ” wide, 2.6 deep (including protruding keys). NOTE: A closely related 1935 Vedette alarm clock is offered for 250 USD by a Strasbourg, France merchant. Final photograph illustrates the Bakelite case cracked from front to back.
