Vintage Movie Theater Concession Area Art Deco Marquee Sign & Clock
VINTAGE MOVIE THEATER CONCESSION AREA ART DECO MARQUEE SIGN & CLOCK. Some years ago I built a 1950’s style movie theater in my home and decorated it with a number of authentic, vintage movie theater items that I acquired. It is time now for me to pass these items on to other collectors. This is a very rare Art Deco piece that more than likely hung in the concession area of a 1920’s to 1940’s movie theater. The sign is made of wood and metal with a Sessions clock at the top that no longer works. It stands 37″ tall and is 19″ wide by 7 deep. The back is a piece of metal that forms a triangle with the front, leading me to believe that it was hung in a corner (or sat on a shelf in a corner) of the concession area. There is a hinged metal lid at the top which provides access to the area inside so that the light bulb and poster can be changed out. The poster in the piece is an 11″ x 17″ reproduction of the one sheet poster for Creature From the Black Lagoon and is included. The body of the sign is made from two types of wood with ridging added to give the piece an Art Deco look. The front is glass, with red, blue and black stripes painted around the outside edge. At the bottom of the marquee are milk glass panels that light up in red. I would guess that this section would have shown prices for concession items. There are no markings or labels on the piece that would indicate its maker, and it could even have been made by a local craftsman. It is truly a very rare item. Please check all the photos and you will realize what a great find this sign is!
