SUPERB ICONIC FRENCH VINTAGE ART DECO / MODERNIST 8 DAY MANTLE CLOCK c1930. Truly Spirit of the Age. Here is a superbly stylish 8 day clock made by the French clockmakers MARTI. This would have been produced c1930 when MARTI were at their height of Innovation. They were leaders in design, catching the mood of the decadent age, then pushing the fashion just that little bit further. This clock is mounted on a wonderful piece of polished black Granite with chrome base plate. Constructed in Peach Mirrored Glass and brass Spheres and circles. The tubular semi circle supports the thick glass clock face circle holding the glorious gilt etched stylised chapter numbering. The glass is wonderfully thick, the gilt brass solid carriage and spheres beautifully crafted and sit on a chrome mounting plate to the granite…… To the rear are all the winders and hand setters. Stamped into the rear clock housing is MARTI logo, along with “8 Jours”, MODELE DEPOSE…. Overall the clock stands an inspiring 11 1/2 inches high, the carriage is 11 1/2 inches. The clock face is 9 1/2 in diameter. The Granite base is 20 1/2 inches long and wide 1 inch….. 4 inches wide and weighing almost 4 kg!! The clock mechanism has an adjustment aperture. The whole clock is complete and in original condition. There is the tiniest chip to the top corner of the base, really quite unnoticeable see photo. The side wings are near perfect with some wear to the mirroring. The clock happily ticks away and keeps excellent time, and whilst I have owned it, it has never been fully wound. Photo 1 – there is a circular image to the side please don’t confuse the reflection of my chrome drinks trolley with the aforementioned wear circle. Other than that, and the fabulous patina to the gilding, and signs of polishing to the chrome connector plate it is a superb example of French Moderne/Deco design.
