Antique gingerbread clock, 8 day Roze model, made by Welch, Spring & Co. It measures 21 inches high with a 6 1/4 inch dial. The dial is flaked but not terribly and is lined—please zoom in on photo. The base is 13 3/4 inches wide and 4 3/4 inches deep. This clock case features lovely hand carved floral Victorian designs with turned ornaments on a gingerbread shape. It is rosewood veneered but the finish is not oringinal; it seems to have an satin oil finish. I remember when tung oil was popular and it looks like that to me. Golden wheat separates the two. Each corner has a decoration also. The clock is in good condition and in working condition, though not recently cleaned. This is a time and strike clock, striking on the hour, with, in addition, an alarm clock mechanism. It has 2 holes or winding arbours, one for the time and one for the strike. The included key turns counterclockwise for winding. The key came with the clock when I acquired it in the 1980’s but must not be original because it cannot turn the alarm winding post mechanism. I never used the alarm. No one would actually want to–watching on You Tube, I learned that setting it is quite inaccurate and that the sound is unpleasant and cannot be turned off. Though I did not know it until researching to list my clock, the pendulum is a replacement. It is French made, marked Bte S. G. D. G. Which is not a brand but stands for patented, without guaranty from the government. The pendulum works fine but has hung slightly askew all these years… Maybe when you rehang it, it will hang straight! The base will also be detached. Lastly, photos 9 and 10 show that the previous owner scratched numbers on the back and on top the case behind the gingerbread. The rosewood does not fit perfectly on the top. Photo 11 shows the underside of the base with some old pieces of felt, the key and the pendulum. I see a little sheen of glue along the backside of the gingerbread trim on the right side. That isn’t photographed, I’m out of allowed number of photos. There is excellent information on these clocks, including history about Welch, Spring and Co.
