Up for your consideration- A Very large and rare French figural clock of a Blacksmith forging a sickle on his anvil c. Original Sculpture: Titled ” Le Forgeron ” , c. Dimensions: 31 inches tall, 8 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches at the base. Material: Cast in Spelter (a zinc alloy), used from the 1860’s in the manufacturing of candlesticks, clock cases, tableware and light fixtures. In the early 20th century sculptors used Spelter in Art Nouveau and Art Deco figurines. The base of this clock and the blacksmith’s removable sledge hammer are wooden. Finish: Original Dark Bronze paint. Clockwork: The original wind up mechanical clockwork was by S. Of Apparatuses of Precision and Watchmaking. Established in 1918 by M. Philippe Cassan, the ancient professor of the National School of Watchmaking of Transverse Valleys. Sadly, this clockwork is now lost and has been replaced by a working modern quartz movement. However, the original porcelain dial, hands, front and rear hinged access doors, winder key and chime remain. Hardware: The figure is mounted to the wooden base using square steel nuts that were used until the mid 20th century. Decorative bronze figurines were produced in France, Germany and Austria and painted with enamel paints and lacquer, with the more expensive examples having heads and limbs of carved ivory. Produced for home decoration in the 1920s and 1930s and originally for sale in jewelry and department stores, they were often given as wedding presents and presentation gifts. Often they were custom-made in colored finishes to match the customer’s room decoration and tips were given on how to display the figures for maximum effect in illuminated niches. Examples can be found on many different colored marble and onyx bases, mounted on clocks and turned into lamps. So one can find examples of large French figurines made of spelter (a zinc alloy) combined with an imitation ivory known as ivorine that give the look (but not the quality) of the large bronze and ivory figurines. Germany also produced spelter and ivorine figures but these are much smaller in size. There are also examples of figurines made solely of spelter and colored with metallic enamels; once again, the larger examples were usually French. Date : Since this clock is not dated, we are able to reasonably conclude that according to the information presented above as c. Condition: This clock is in overall very good condition with no cracks or breaks. There are a few minor paint chips here and there and, of course, the noted missing original clockwork which have been priced accordingly. Please use the calculator for a quote.
