Jefferson Golden Hour Mystery Clock – Mid-Century Modern / Retro (1950s). Restored to Accurate Running Condition and Excellent Appearance. Welcome to Bugsy’s Dad Enterprises. ^^^ Specialists in Sales and Service of Jefferson Golden Hour Mystery Clocks ^^^. Prices will vary with available stock for restoration. We encourage you to read on to see how our clocks are superior to other Jefferson clocks listed for sale, at any price. We have yet to see any Jefferson clocks for sale that can claim their restoration work is better than ours. You can find cheaper Jefferson Mystery clocks and even some more expensive, but you won’t find any better. These are authentic Jefferson Golden Hour Mystery clocks. They were manufactured starting in the early 1950s through 1991. Most of the clocks we sell were manufactured at the peak of their popularity during the 1950s. If the date of manufacture is known, it will be provided with the clock. The clocks were manufactured by the Jefferson Electric Company of Bellwood, Illinois, a company that was named in honor of US President Thomas Jefferson, who was himself a prolific inventor and scientist. These clocks use an original design of Leendert Prins of the Netherlands, that were patented in the 1940s. The clocks are named Mystery Clocks because of the clever design that makes the clock hands appear to float unsupported inside the outer or Chapter Ring displaying the hours. The hands and a small gear drive are attached to the glass face-plate that is turned by an internal motor. There are a number of other clocks in the mystery clock family. There are the Golden Minute, Exciting Hour, Golden Helm as well as the Golden Hour, which was produced in large numbers. Other Jefferson clocks include, the Golden Secret and the Suspense mystery clock, which utilize a different drive design. A few others such as the Golden View clock are very rare and primarily seen in museum collections. Each Jefferson being offered for sale has undergone disassembly, cleaning, repair or replacement of failed parts, electrical rewiring, motor replacement, reassembly including alignment and both metal and glass protective treatments. Some of these clocks are over 60-years old and nearly all have minor imperfections to the gold finish, such as small’dimples’, light scratches, and slight discoloration. Our restoration process minimizes the unsightly appearance of these imperfections as much as possible. Following restoration work, each clock receives a 24 hour test run to check accuracy. The “Golden” in the name of these clocks is from the actual electroplated 24-karat brushed-gold exterior finish. Some damage to the finish we see here is due to previous owners incorrectly believing the surface was brass and used brass cleaners to polish the clock. Brass cleaners contain abrasives that will rub the gold finish off and expose the nickel surface below it. We caution new owners to NEVER attempt to polish their clock with any type of metal cleaner to avoid damage to the gold surface. A light dusting or a wipe down with a very slightly dampened clean cloth is the only recommended cleaning for the gold-plated finish. The glass face-plate is also treated to minimize fingerprints and should only be cleaned with a very lightly dampened cloth or paper towel as well. Owners are cautioned to NEVER attempt to lubricate these clocks. Their design precludes the need for any lubrication, and the use of it will cause serious damage to the clock. Many clocks arriving here at our shop for repairs have been lubricated by well-meaning owners that has caused catastrophic damage to the device. Note to International Buyers: We can replace the standard 110 v AC motor with a 220v AC configuration for an additional charge. We will also convert the power plug to that needed by your local power system, in most cases. There are some minor and simple adjustments that can be made by the owner, and we will try to address the issue in this manner before authorizing a return. Cost Comparison : We conduct ongoing research to determine fair prices for our clocks and repair services. There are very few clock shops that offer these services, as having an adequate on-hand inventory of the specialized parts for these clocks is both expensive and difficult, and professional-quality repairs can be time-consuming. This is both necessary and fair of them, as they must pay rent, utilities and other qualified employees to conduct business in a normal retail setting. Our desire is to keep our potential clients informed of the true value of our services that are identical in all aspects to those performed elsewhere. We are also driven by a desire to preserve these clocks as living history more than our modest profit alone. These clocks are a fascinating example of historic American horological engineering and artistry that makes them an excellent conversation piece in your home or office, or perhaps as an unusual gift for that perfect occasion. Note: We can finish the color of the lines on the hands, numbers, and pips (the dashes between hours on the clock outer ring) in either black or white. There are some photos provided with this listing that show a clock with the white painting on it. Diameter of the clock face is approx. Overall height is approx. The base unit is – approx. 6″ wide x 4 1/2″ deep x 2 high. We also provide complete repair services for the Golden Hour and Exciting Hour clocks, and limited service to the Golden Minute and Golden Helm clocks. Service is limited due to the availability of parts for these less common clocks. Buyers, please take note : We are a small shop and can be very busy at times. Rest assured that the quality of workmanship and appearance will be well worth any short delay in receiving your new timepiece.
