This is an breathtaking, well made, very rare, working, key wind mantel or desk clock that was created about 40 years ago in what was then, “West Germany, ” by the “Linden” Clock Company, one of the finest clockmakers in history! The clock case is made entirely of wood, and finished in a remarkable blend of walnut tones. There are beveled wooden feet in each corner underneath to lend support and a golden brass metal bar mounted lengthwise in front under the dial. There is a hinged brass metal bezel secured to the front over the dial and a convex glass crystal is inset into it; no cracks or chips that I can see. The round dial is brushed silvertone metal and features large, easy to read, black arabic numerals to mark the hours and fancy metal hands to point out the time. There is a hinged door in the very back that is secured with a metal latch. It opens easily to allow access to the key wind, mechanical balance wheel movement produced by Hermle and bearing the Linden name as well as the West Germany point of origin. A balance wheel movement simply means that the clock doesn’t have to be perfectly level to work properly. The clock winds in front on three winding arbors and lasts for about eight days on a single wind. This clock plays music too but not just Westminster Chimes. It also plays Whittington or St Michael Chimes too! There is a lever on the dial that allows you to choose which chimes you’d like to play and even a selection that allows for silencing the chimes in case you wish to do so; great feature for light sleepers or when company is in town. For example, if you select Westminster Chimes, the clock plays a beautiful four-note melody at the quarter hour mark on eight golden metal chime bars inside the case; eight notes at the half hour mark, twelve at the 3/4 hour mark, and the full sixteen note melody at the top of each hour. The clock will then chime the current number of hours at the top of each hour, just like Big Ben in London! If you select either St Michael or Whittington chimes, the melodies are equally gorgeous and very elaborate with eight notes on the quarter, 16 notes on the half, etc. You have to hear this to believe it! The clock comes complete as shown with the crank style, metal winding key. This is a magnificent clock to be sure and equally so in size measuring about 9″ high, about about 5″ deep, and about 19 1/2 wide. The clock works quite well here, keeps good time, and the chimes are absolutely heavenly though keep in mind, this is an old clock and some adjustments or service may be necessary once the clock arrives at its new home. We always advise our clock customers to service their antique or vintage clocks at least once every three years. Doing so will keep a classic timepiece like this one, healthy for years to come. I’ve looked the clock over fairly well and can’t find any damage, missing parts, or signs of repair; maybe a nick here and there but nothing detracting. The clock is in very nice condition and is absolutely stunning on display! This clock would be a hallmark in any collection and is certain to impress anyone seeing or hearing it in your home, office, or wherever it is that you care to showcase a wonderful, rare German timepiece with incredible chimes and a fabulous legacy behind it.
