Jefferson Golden Hour Mystery Clock Service— Restoration , Repair, and Cleaning. PLEASE READ : THIS LISTING IS AN OFFER TO PROVIDE RESTORATION AND REPAIR SERVICES FOR YOUR CLOCK. The above photos illustrate an example of a typical completed restoration project on a number of different clocks completed by our shop. The actual outcome is dependent on the current appearance of your clock. We are able to minimize the appearance of some cosmetic issues, however they are rarely completely’fixed’. We usually have clocks nearly available for sale. The “Golden” portion of the name is attributed to the authentic 24k gold plating on the base, chapter ring, external gear drive and hands. The main parts of the clock are of a cast zinc alloy, electroplated with nickel and then a final electroplate of the 24k gold. Some owners incorrectly believing the metal to be brass have used abrasive cleaners on the clock that over time exposed the silvery nickel plating beneath the upper gold layer. Also over time, the zinc alloy castings corrode and develop tiny dimples that push up through the outer surface of the clock. At that time production ceased and only the on-hand clocks and parts remain. These clocks proved to be very reliable and reasonably accurate for electric clocks of the day. The motors and gear ring drive for the glass are the Achille’s heel for most of them after 50+ (or more) years of reliable service. Today, the replacement motors are difficult and expensive to obtain, as they are of an electrical design not commonly used today along with the need to use a reduction gear assembly to accurately drive the clock. I like many others, bought a few of these clocks only to find they were in poor shape mechanically and cosmetically. Using diagrams and parts lists that I found, I taught myself how to repair and restore these clocks with great success, including some improvements that I devised to reduce the strain on the small motor that operates the clock. After restoring a number of the Jefferson clocks, I found that I really enjoyed the repair and restoration part of owning them. A number of friends seeing my collection, told me that they have seen them over the years, but none were in working condition and an idea was born to help other Jefferson clock owners get theirs in running order and suitable to display. Due to lack of critical parts, I cannot repair the other types of Mystery clocks that are available. My service is limited to the Jefferson Golden Hour Mystery clock only. The name of the clock is located on the plastic cover on the bottom of the base unit. My service includes; complete disassembly, inspection, repair or replacement of any failed internal parts, a thorough cleaning of the clock internal parts and external surfaces, specialized dry lubrication at needed areas and repainting of the chapter ring pips and clock hands. I also replace the clock’s power cord as needed at no additional charge. Each clock’s exterior parts are then coated with a specialized industrial product, that fully seals and protects the gold finish. This material reduces the care of the clock to a mere dry dusting as needed. I also treat the glass face with a material that reduces fingerprints and only needs an occasional wipe-down with a damp towel or lint-free cloth. One should NEVER put any type of lubricant on your clock as it attracts dust and dirt that will rapidly cause a failure. Not counting the test run of at least 24 hours, these repairs require at least 8-10 hours of detailed work. In a few cases a malfunctioning motor can be repaired, however a new replacement is normally required. I do have an inventory of most needed parts for repairs, as well as new motors that may be required. I’ll do my best to have your clock back to you as soon as possible. It would also be very helpful to give me a brief idea of what appears to be the main issue with your clock. I handle every clock I service as if it were one of my own. I take tremendous pride in my workmanship performing the repair and restoration of your clock and fully expect that it will give you many years of trouble-free service. We are not a commercial operation , just avid and dedicated collectors that love vintage clocks and hopes to keep these classic, historic American-made devices from extinction. As such, our charges are considerably less than would be charged by a commercial repair service. We have seen other services offering lower prices, however they charge additionally for many needed parts, at marked-up prices, that we include in our standard service package price.
