For sale is an unusual and impressive European art deco clock set, circa 1920, made of bronzed spelter, featuring three classical Roman figures and two panthers, with highly detailed casting throughout. The clock is topped with a noble looking figure of a soldier in uniform holding a spear and shield. Beneath him, flanking the clock face, are two opposing panthers in high relief. Separate from the clock are two statues of gladiators in loin cloths, one posed as if to hold a sword and one posed with a bow and arrow. Each figure rests on a square plaster base painted to look like black marble, with an additional black slate footing beneath the plaster. There are various condition issues consistent with age. I have never attempted to set the clock and I doubt it works. The clock face has paint losses. The gladiator topping the clock is attached with two screws and wobbles slightly. The faux marble bases have minor chipping. One gladiator has lost his sword and wields a rusty nail that is removable. The archer appears to have a crack in one foot but is totally stable; possibly a production defect or old repair. Please see photos for details. I imported this from England but it looks French to me. The clock is 12.75 high to the top of the spear and weighs 5 lbs. One figurine is 8 tall and weighs 1.5 lbs. The other figurine is 8.25 tall and weighs 1.75 lbs. The item “Antique Art Deco Bronzed Metal Roman Gladiator Clock Set Neoclassical Regency” is in sale since Monday, August 27, 2018.
