Mystery art deco clock made by Smith’s Electronic Clocks c. A rare opportunity to acquire this superb clock for your collection. It is 20cm high and 16 cm wide. So whats the Mystery? The clockwork for this clock is housed in the small chromium plated drum in the centre of the dial. Inside this small drum is the motion work for the hands and a ratchet mechanism. The clock has three glass plates. One is the dial with the numerals on the inside. Another is the back which has the hands adjuster fixed to the centre. The third piece of glass is inside between the two other glasses. This inside glass is attached to the central barrel and is rocked slightly from side to side by an electric motor in the base of the clock. This rocking motion is enough to operate the ratchet mechanism which then turns the hands. As the glass cannot be seen moving, to observers the way the hands move is a’Mystery’. Cosmetically in wonderful condition. The chrome has no pitting, a few minor signs of wear and tear but nothing. For a piece of this age. There are no cracks in the glass. A couple of the letters has’shifted’ slightly on the front glass as can be seen in the photos, I have seen this before on this clock and other Smiths clocks. The clock is taking mains power as I have seen the hands move for myself but the mechanism will need looking at to get it keeping time correctly. So there I cannot sell it as a fully working clock as it stands. Please ask if you have any more questions about the clock or would like any additional photos.
