An extremely rare Art Deco clock by one of the most sort after sculptors of the late 19th and early 20th century – Jean Baptiste Hugues. A beautiful clock case made from brown and honey onyx / Art Deco influenced Geometric design , numeric dial typical of the Art Deco period. Mounted with two graceful cubist panthers cast in bronze both of them signed J. A Superior quality Art Deco Time Piece. An original 8 days movement is stamped F. It is in clean, working condition. Its strikes on the hour and half an hour. Jean Baptiste Hugues was a very successful sculptor during his lifetime. Born in Marseille in 1849 , he passed away in Paris in 1930. He was one of the leading Artists of his period. He won Grand Prix de Rome in 1875 and has been widely commented on by a critics and writers while exhibiting in Salons. Some of his most famous works were. Femme jouant avec son enfant, marble, 1880, La Piscine (museum of art and industry), Roubaix. Ombres de Paolo et Francesca da Rimini, 1877, outline for the Prix de Rome, Musée d’Orsay, Paris. Limoges and Nantes, allegorical statues for the Gare de Tours, 1898, for architect Victor Laloux. La Muse de la source, 1900, fonte, marble, bronze, Musée d’Orsay. La Misère, 1907, Jardin des Tuileries in Paris. Jean Baptiste was primarily commissioned by the French government and wealthy individuals. This clock was probably one of his last works. It was commissioned as one off piece for a wealthy client and wouldnt have been reproduced. In good antique condition with common signs of age to the clock case.
