VINTAGE ART DECO PETROL POCKET THORENS SELF WINDING CLOCK/WATCH and LIGHTER C1920s. Offered for sale is this Thorens Original Art Deco Petrol Pocket lighter with a SELF WINDING watch/clock. This is the Thorens Original single claw large body version and is manufactured from brass with a superb engine turned finish in a dotted pattern and a very fine lined background. The lighter finish is gold plated. The lighter works perfectly and has a smooth open and close action and the lid fits well to the body. The lid spring is strong and the lighter will operate correctly when fuel, flint and wick are added. The lid snaps shut perfectly. I have removed all the means of combustion due to postal regulations. The self winding watch is fully working and keeps good time when testing over a 8 hour period. This is the original watch fitment used on the self winding watch models. For the technically minded and interested, the self winding mechanism is wound by closing the lid after use. There is a small indicator on the watch face which turns a quarter turn (90 degrees) each time the lid is closed to indicate the winding mechanism is working. The winding arm is pivoted from the rear of the watch fitment and drives a cogged wheel on the watch winding apparatus. The arm is moved from a small peg located at the end of the claw which drives the flintwheel each time the lid is closed. The lid has the early snuffer fitted in place, the flintwheel has the screw fixing so I would probably estimate a late 1920s or early 1930s manufacture. The base is the overlap style and marked Brevete Suise ET ETRANGER. The original fuel screws (in 2 positions) are fitted into the base of the lighter and also have the spare flint holders. The lid locking screw mechanism prevents lighter operation when in the pocket. The lighter measures 59mm x 36mm x 11mm. The finish is gold plate with slight brassing around two edges of the watch bezel. There are no dings or dents in the body at all. The gold plated finish has become dull through age and there are some very minor dirt marks in the plating again due to age and pocket wear so it would benefit from a professional cleaning process by a jeweller. All in all the lighter is in very good but used condition. Please check out all my other lighters that I shall be listing in the next few weeks from my collection.
